Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has announced the official launch of newly designated license plates for electric vehicles, in a move aimed at advancing the Sultanate’s efforts toward environmental sustainability.
The initiative will come into effect on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, and is intended to support the growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across Oman by providing distinct visual identifiers for these environmentally friendly modes of transport.
According to the new system, private electric vehicles will feature yellow plates with black text, easily recognisable by the inclusion of an EV symbol and the word "Oman" in Arabic script. Commercial, taxi, and rental electric vehicles will carry red plates with white text, also displaying the EV symbol to indicate their eco-friendly classification. For electric vehicles that are not authorised for use on public roads, such as those operating within private or industrial premises, the plates will be black with white text, offering a clear distinction from road-legal EVs.
The ROP encourages vehicle owners and stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the new designs as the regulation comes into force.
